• Equinix opens first Jakarta data centre with Astra amid rising digital demand.

Equinix has opened its first data centre in Indonesia, marking the company’s official entry into the country’s growing digital infrastructure market. The new facility, called JK1, is located in Jakarta and launched as part of a joint venture with PT Astra International Tbk.

Indonesia’s digital economy is on track to hit US$130 billion by 2025, with demand for faster, more reliable connectivity and data services rising across industries. JK1 aims to support that demand by offering businesses access to more than 50 global and local network providers and internet exchanges. The data centre is designed to help companies scale operations while staying connected both regionally and globally.

Government leaders have welcomed the move. Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, called JK1 “a strategic gateway” for global tech players and startups looking to grow in the country. “Indonesia has the advantage of sufficient water supply and competitive energy access, including the great potential of green energy, which is a key factor in the operational efficiency of data centres,” she said. Hafid added that the facility also opens up chances for local businesses—from large firms to small enterprises—to take part in a more connected digital economy.

Ricky Kusmayadi, Deputy Minister for Investment Information Technology at the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board, said the launch reflects Indonesia’s appeal as a long-term digital investment destination. “This collaboration between global and local partners supports our vision of positioning Indonesia as a regional digital hub,” he said. “We invite more investors to explore opportunities in Indonesia’s data centre industry and take part in building a strong, sustainable digital infrastructure.”

Cyrus Adaggra, Equinix’s Asia-Pacific president, said that JK1 already has customers lined up and that interest has been strong since day one. “Southeast Asia is a strategic market for Equinix and our global customers. Over the past few years, we’ve been growing across the region to meet rising digital needs,” he said. “With JK1, we’re better positioned to support local firms as well as multinationals expanding in the region.”

The demand for cloud services is one reason why. Haris Izmee, Managing Director of Equinix Indonesia, pointed to the rapid growth of e-commerce in the country and a sharp rise in cloud adoption as major drivers. “E-commerce remains Indonesia’s largest digital sector and may reach US$120 billion by 2025,” Izmee said. “That growth needs solid infrastructure behind it. JK1 helps deliver the scale and performance companies are asking for. It’s also part of a longer-term push toward Indonesia Emas 2045 and building a digital economy that can last.”

Astra Director Santosa said the joint venture builds on Astra’s work in digital development. He noted that JK1 is intended to serve both domestic and international needs. “The combination of Equinix’s experience in digital infrastructure and Astra’s understanding of the local market will help JK1 meet the demands of businesses across Indonesia,” he said.

Key details about JK1

JK1 is located in Jakarta’s central business district, close to major internet exchanges. The site allows local firms to plug into Equinix’s wider network of data centres worldwide.

The eight-story facility currently offers 550 cabinets in its first phase, with capacity to expand to 1,600 cabinets and 5,300 square meters of colocation space once fully built. Businesses will be able to use Equinix interconnection services such as Equinix Fabric and Equinix Internet Access to create their own digital ecosystems and expand faster.

Energy efficiency and sustainability were also built into the site’s design. JK1 uses Cooling Array and liquid cooling systems to handle high-performance workloads, including AI. It’s expected to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.41 at full load and will operate within the A1A standards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

The facility is also 100% matched with renewable energy through the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). Equinix reported that it reached 96% renewable coverage across its global operations in 2024.

Equinix says its data centres maintain uptime performance of over 99.999% worldwide. Across the Asia-Pacific region, the company now runs 60 data centres in 16 cities including in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore. It also recently expanded into the Philippines and Thailand. In China, it operates five data centres in Shanghai through a local partnership.

JK1 is expected to serve as a key part of this broader regional network, supporting the growing need for faster, more connected, and more reliable digital services in Indonesia.
