Drinking Temperature
Served at 120°F (48°C)
Ingredients
- 4 cups of apple cider
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- ½ tsp ground clove
- 1 bottle of red wine
- 2 shots of whiskey
- 4 to 6 apples (use a variety)
- ¼ tsp salt
- 6 to 10 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tbsp whole cloves
- 1 tbsp whole star anise
- 2-3 sprigs of rosemary
Directions
- In a small mixing bowl, combine all of the sugar and ground spices.
- In a large pot over medium heat, add the apple cider and the spice mixture. Stir to help the sugar and spices mix into the cider. Let the pot simmer for about 10 minutes.
- For this recipe, you will want to store the sangria in two glass carafes. To prepare, thinly slice up the apples. We recommend using a couple of different varieties such as granny smith, fuji, and honeycrisp to add some color to your sangria. Equally distribute the apples between the carafes.
- Next, add the cloves and star anise to the carafes followed by your desired amount of cinnamon sticks and rosemary sprigs for each carafe. Remember you can always add more, but can’t subtract once the flavors have mingled.
- Divide the spiced apple cider into the carafes. Finish by dividing the bottle of wine and whiskey equally between each carafe. We suggest a less expensive bottle of wine since it’s going to be mixed with sugars and spices. We also recommend fruit-forward Spanish wines such as Garnachas, Tempranillos, Riojas, or Malbecs.
- Cover the pitchers and place them in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours before serving.
- To serve, add one pitcher to a medium-sized pot and put on a low-heat simmer on the stove for about 10 to 15 minutes. Make sure not to let it boil to ensure the alcohol doesn’t evaporate.
