How to Make Matcha Hot Chocolate

December 06, 2022

There are a lot of amazing hot chocolate concoctions for making the winter season all the sweeter, such as a Chai spiced white hot chocolate recipe or even a Cadbury crème hot chocolate. But if you want to get a healthy and delicious dose of a superfood with your hot chocolate, then nothing beats matcha hot chocolate.

Perfectly balanced between bitter and sweet, slightly caffeinated, and wonderfully refreshing, this matcha hot chocolate recipe is a cold-weather favorite and perfect for any time of the day.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk (whichever milk or non-dairy milk alternative you prefer)
  • ½ cup white chocolate chopped
  • 1 tablespoon matcha
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Toasted marshmallows (Optional)

Directions

  1. Pour the milk into a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat.
  2. Remove the milk from the heat and whisk in the chopped white chocolate until melted.
  3. Sift in the matcha.
  4. Add the honey and salt to the matcha hot chocolate, stirring until well combined.
  5. Pour the matcha hot chocolate into an Ember Mug².
  6. Top with toasted marshmallows and sprinkle on some of the sifted matcha powder (if desired), and enjoy!

Making Your Matcha Hot Chocolate Silky Smooth

If you want to make sure that your hot chocolate matcha is as smooth as possible, then you will want to sift the matcha into a small bowl of hot (not boiling) water until it dissolves completely. After taking this step, then incorporate the matcha into the hot chocolate in your saucepan.

This is the key to a smooth matcha hot chocolate.

Similarly, if you want a lighter, frothier version of this chocolate matcha beverage, then use an immersion blender or vigorously whisk the concoction for a few seconds after mixing in the matcha.

On the other hand, if you prefer a thicker matcha hot chocolate, then feel free to add in more chocolate to thicken it up.

Get Quality Matcha

If you are going to make a matcha hot chocolate, it is important to get good matcha, which usually ranges between $20 and $30. When shopping for matcha, you will know it is good if it is a vibrant green color. Those that are dull green are lower quality and won’t give you the flavor profile you want.

Additionally, if you happen to come across sweetened matcha, we don’t recommend using those with added sugar. The chocolate and honey should provide plenty of sweetness for this matcha hot chocolate recipe.

Try It with Semi-Sweet Chocolate Instead

If you prefer, or if you love this recipe and want to try something new, swap out the white chocolate for semi-sweet chocolate instead of white chocolate for a matcha hot chocolate that is a small twist on the original classic.

Matcha and white chocolate are a perfectly balanced bitter-sweet combo that makes for a wonderful winter beverage. Be sure to keep your matcha hot chocolate’s temperature perfectly balanced by serving it in an Ember Mug² or Ember Cup.

Because temperature matters.
